Taking Video Production to Wetaskiwin

Summer of 2019 was an eventful few months to say the least. We had so many exciting projects, but one of the most memorable ones was filming a video production for Edmonton International Raceway (EIR). We were asked to do a 30 second commercial for EIR’s advertisement video for use in social media (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube), to increase awareness! In the 30 second video, we highlighted the facility’s racetrack & pit, while also showcasing the cars and the drivers. Our goal was to emphasize the positive energy at EIR, and emanate the fun and excitement at Edmonton International Raceway! The EIR is located in Wetaskawin and is Western Canada’s only nascar sanctioned race track. The raceway is a complete hidden gem, with fantastic food and super family friendly.

Rain, Rain, Go Away… Lucked Out On Filming Day!

As all Edmontonians are aware, our summer was not ‘great’, in fact some would say we didn’t even have a summer. We had 54 days of rain between June and August, and only had a handful of days above 25 degrees celsius. This being said, we were so incredibly lucky to have filmed the video on a day when it wasn’t raining. The crew took an early mini road trip to Wetaskiwin, the home of EIR. It was incredible to see this gigantic race track that can hold thousands of people, with maybe 5 people physically there. We got great shots from various points on the track and in the pit. We mounted GoPros to race cars being driven by professional race car drivers, as they did laps around the track. The smell of gasoline, burned rubber and the sound of the engines roaring and tires squealing was something I had never experienced before. Male and female drivers, took turns zooming with the mounted cameras on their hoods or inside their vehicles. As well, we had one of our cities best drone operators, get gorgeous aerial shots of the race track, and follow cars as they made their way around the pit. We even had the opportunity sit inside their bullet fast, bat mobiles. One would think that after watching Ricky Bobby multiple times, I would have known that race cars do not have doors- NOPE. I ever so ungracefully stumbled through the window and did up the 5 way seat belt. You can see the joy and shame in my face in the photo below.

EIR is home to the only 10 Lap Stock Car Test Drive Experience where “you can drive a real race car on a real race car track” or where you can try your own car on a paved oval race track!

Editing

Editing took about two days of booth time and was completed in house here at Nordic Media. We selected some upbeat music to go with the tone and only had to do a little colour enhancement. We were so happy with the spectacular drone footage and how well it was transitioned into the GoPro and stabilized shots. The video really makes the viewer feel like they are actually at the track, as well as increase their desire to go to EIR. Ultimately, the owners and staff at the Edmonton International Raceway loved the video and resulted in more ticket sales- which is our definition of a successful video production.

A Production Made With Love

Our video production and community engagement journey working with the Edmonton Down syndrome Society began in April at the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce’s Spring Showcase and social event. Some would call it luck however, we would call it fate. Our booth was about an arms length away from the Edmonton Down Syndrome Society’s. That evening I had the absolute pleasure getting to know Tanya, an inspiring role model and advocate of down syndrome as well as her mother, Rosalind, director of the Edmonton Down Syndrome Society. She was curious about the types of production we do, and if we would consider doing something for EDSS, for their largest and well known fashion show and fundraiser, Uniquely Me. Without hesitation, we were on board and honoured to be a part of this event.

Rosalind and Tanya’s goal was to explain and show people how living with Down Syndrome (Ds) or with someone that has D’s, is often misconstrued. As Tanya fabulously puts it, “we all have genes, mine are just designer’. She is the walking example of an individual who can rock designer genes, because she has been able to afford and have access to speech education. Because she has learned these fundamental communication skill, it has opened so many doors to many other opportunities provided by the Edmonton Down Syndrome Society. Rosalind and Tanya wanted this video production to encourage those attending The Uniquely Me fundraiser to support the Society so they can provide speech pathology to children with Ds.

 

A Society Dedicated To Down Syndrome

Not only does the EDSS provide individuals with down syndrome the opportunities and experiences to learn and grow, but it also provides support community to their families and loved ones as well. EDSS strives to encourage growth and success by engaging individuals to achieve success and happiness in their home, school and community life. By creating awareness about the unique abilities and potential that lies within each and every person born with Ds, our world becomes empowered with knowledge, compassion and inspiration.The Edmonton Down Syndrome Society supports individuals born with Ds and their families in Alberta  from Red Deer north, including Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Bonnyville and Fort McMurray up to the North West Territories.

Creating the Video

In late spring Rosalind reached out to us, to help with production and be a part of their largest event of the year, Uniquely Me. We were so delighted and excited to work with a few families that volunteered to partake in the video. With Rosalind’s top notch organizational skills we managed to film all of the “talents” in 2 sessions. We had the absolute pleasure of meeting Eli and Isaac twin boys, both with down Ds. As well as Alanna, Dr. Melanie Lewis and Judy Meintzer, the speech pathologist. We also also had two very special volunteers Ash Hariharan and Emily Johnson, from EDSS partake in the production and share some of their stories and personal experience.

The production was filmed here at our studio as well was all the editing. Rosalind and the Society were fabulous at providing photos and previous footage that were were able to use for this years Uniquely Me event video. When the final product was completed, we sent it Rosalind and the team for approvals and or changes.

 

Uniquely Me, a Night to Remember

On October 23, 2019 as a team we attended the Edmonton Down Syndromes Society’s Uniquely Me, fall fashion and fundraiser. The theme was a Night in Paris. Wow- just WOW. The venue, the decor, the food, the auction items and fashion show- it was simply spectacular. We were greeted with complimentary parking, coat check and a lovely glass of champagne. Server’s were generously offering delicious horderves and the desert table was overflowing with gorgeous deserts and pastries. In the midst of the live auction, our video was played on both big screens. It was an amazing feeling to see a project being used for such a great cause, and it was even greater to see how it touched the hearts of so many people. We wanted people to feel inspired and moved from hearing the many personal stories in our video. As well encourage everyone in the room to help individuals with Ds get the resources for speech pathology. It was such a pleasure to see so many Edmontonians engaging and gathering to support the EDSS.

Customizing Video Production

Video Production was the topic of discussion when we met Bret and Ricardo in the fall of 2017. They came to us for creative direction for a tech forward concept that would revolutionize the way office visitor sign ins are managed. As anyone who has had experience with app development knows- it is an extremely long waiting game, filled with hurdles and curve balls. After a period of development, assessment and research we were finally to film and produce their explainer video for their app. During our creative meeting we pinned down a budget and achieved a common vision.  With an affordable budget in place, the creative team got to work writing a script, filmed and edited the commercial. We staged our Nordic Media office and filmed the video production here at our location. As well, held a mini casting audition and selected two local professional actors and even featured Brett, one of the app creators. The 30 second commercial was intended to increase brand awareness and capture consumer interest. Our goal was to present the app as a convenient tool for office security and a modernized alternative for guest sign-ins. Visitor Bay believes that managing and organizing visitors can be easier with this app, as it directly notifies the individual when their appointment has arrived.

Rebranding and Web Design

When Franco initially met with us, he was just looking for a simple video, but eventually we were hired to work on the web design. The M Group brand had already been developed and Franco was currently working on his building his business. We chatted about marketing, the importance of a clear brand image and web design. After doing several M Group videos and getting to know one another on a personal level he committed to working on further M Group projects with our firm. Last year, Franco officially brought us on to take over all of M Group’s digital marketing, web design and rebranding. Our first task of business was modernizing and revamping the traditional brand logo.  As a marketing agency, we can be pretty meticulous on the psychology behind colours. The original accent colour for M Group was a candy apple red, which exuded passion and draws attention but it can also be perceived as a sign of caution. Our goal was to find a colour that popped and enticed, but more importantly influenced. We chose to incorporate some more orange hue, as it encourages socialization, stimulates energy and optimism.  After selecting the ideal colour, we cleaned up the font and  replaced the ‘times new roman” with something a little more crisp and approachable. Franco was thrilled with the completed web design and rebranding! We then built the entire website from scratch, keeping the layout and font consistent and sophisticated with the logo. We designed the layout, created content , taking over the back end creating funnels and their ecommerce. As well, we provided complete business consulting, assisting in the creation of coaching packages and pricing strategies.

Edmonton Marketing & Creative

As a local Edmonton marketing agency we were ecstatic when Fourcha Group, another local business, reached out to us to help them with some video production, creative and marketing projects.

We met Sid and the team over a year ago, when they were looking to build a marketing campaign for Discovery Wharf, a community in the village of Wabumun. This community would provide lakefront properties, ranging from condominiums, duplexes, houses, retail businesses, hotel and marina. As their marketing agency of choice, we had the pleasure of building a creative strategy with a video and updating some branding.  We were super excited when they reached out to us this summer to help them with video production on a new commercial for Century Gates, a gated adult living community 15 minutes west of Edmonton. As a creative team we designed the layout and flow of the commercial and determined what features of the home and community would be displayed. We wanted to make the flow feel natural, believable and most of all memorable.

 

Century Gates is adult living at its finest, and the only gated condominium community in Parkland County. Where luxury homes have access to several golf courses within minutes, a man- made lake and walking trail. Units are 1 Acre lots and are priced starting at $599,000, and built to customization. Customizable features include triple car parking garages, front and rear decks and oversized RV garages. It’s an active community that has annual events and get togethers.

Video Production

When it came down to production, we held a quick casting call for a man and a woman aged 45 and up, to play husband and wife and home owners. We only held this call open for about three days, until we found the perfect on screen couple that replicated exactly what we envisioned. In the video we also featured some Fourcha Group employees (including Sid Chadi and his wife) and numerous residents of Century Gates as extras. We had hair and makeup done on set by a local makeup artist and everyone got to enjoy the delicious barbecue food that we used as props for the commercial. Our goal for this commercial was to show the liveability of this community and to have the characters be relatable and  memorable to viewers. With lighting and a little bit of staging, we captured the architectural build and design of the homes. As well, we were able to showcase the gorgeous granite counters, breathtaking vaulted ceilings, large windows, hardwood flooring and optional finished basements. We scheduled locations for the shoot, filmed the commercial, edited it and utilized SEO to generate more buzz for the company. When it came to selecting music, we wanted something cheerful and upbeat without being too over- the- top. As well, we had a professional drone operator come to take these gorgeous aerial shots of the community. As an Edmonton marketing agency we work very closely with a couple of production representatives at CTV Edmonton and Global Edmonton, who we are an absolute pleasure to work with. The Century Gates video aired on television, for a duration of two weeks on both news channels. We also launched a social marketing campaign on Facebook to generate traffic and messages. By blasting this campaign across social media and on television, we generated numerous leads and contributed to multiple open houses.

This thirty second commercial was a complete success and working with Fourcha Group was absolutely incredible. We definitely lucked out on the weather, as it was raining non stop this entire month of July. Our cast and crew for the video were absolutely terrific and joy to work with. The number of link clicks and the number of messages they received from the ads were mind blowing. In the first 3 weeks of launching the ads, the number of walk throughs tripled. We are so proud of the turnout and are extremely honoured to have been a part of this project and look forward to many more!

We kicked off 2019 with a rockstar client, Dr. Michael Major and Verve orthodontics. He is an orthodontist who specializes in Invisalign and owns the coolest office we have ever seen. It’s an orthodontic office/ cafe/ rec- room, all in one. A paradise for children, and a treat for parents.

We first met Michael back in 2018, with talk of bringing awareness to his clinic. He wanted to present the fun and cheerful side of orthodontistry.

 

Majorly Great:

Instead of the traditional, sterile, plain white walled office with maybe a picture of a flower or a landscape awkwardly thrown up to spice things up a little. He opted for lively colours, huge windows and non florescent lighting (thank goodness). He created a gaming room, a foosball corner, provided computer monitors, an espresso and beverage bar and of course a COMFORTABLE seating area. This office really has it all. When creating this local St. Albert Disney Land, he considered what his own children would love to have and brought it to reality. Michael wanted to showcase the amazing space he built, and to encourage a sense of enjoyment in people’s orthodontic journey and development.

We met for lunch at a nearby restaurant, and within the first few minutes we knew he was not a regular, doctor. When he ordered a coke, we were all in. He’s not the stereotypical ‘sugar sergeant’ and instead believes in a balanced lifestyle. He is a world class human and father, and truly understands what a well realistic diet is.

Marketing Strategy:

We wanted to our audience to feel what we feel when being welcomed into Dr. Majors office, being pleasantly greeted with optimism and positive energy. His patients adore him, and his work truly speaks volumes. He’s like a dental magician,  fixing overbites and underbites, cross-bites, overcrowding, spaces between teeth and overcrowding of teeth. Because of his authentic care and devotion to his practice and his patients, we wanted him to be featured in the 60 second commercial. Our production team casted many local actors and featured some of Dr. Major’s friendly staff and even his adorable children. The commercial was running in theatres across Edmonton and St. Albert and was a huge success.Dr. Major truly cares for his clients. He is remarkable at what he does… perfecting smiles and bolstering confidence for all. It was a true pleasure working with you, Michael and we had a blast creating the live. laugh. smile. commercial.

Who is Neuromed?

Last year we met with Ivan and Lisa Murray, the founders of Neuromed Clinic. They are some of the most welcoming, kind hearted and friendly clients we have had the privilege of of working with. They explained their vision to transform lives and treat those suffering from anxiety and depression with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) . They wanted to establish the first TMS clinic in Edmonton and help millions of people with this successful service. We at Nordic, believe that mental health is very important and were so excited to be a part of this transformational and life altering service. Simply put, it is life-changing and we have witnessed incredible transformations in patients who conquered their depression and no longer need medication to get through the day.

What is TMS?
TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) treatment is a gentle process that treats using magnetic pulses. These pulses stimulate under-active brain cells, activating them to work more efficiently.The treatment is approved by Health Canada and Food and Drug Administration. It improves or offers complete remission for depression and anxiety. The usual recommended number of treatments is between 20-30 over a period of 4-6 weeks.

About Neuromed Clinic

Dr. Ivan Murray works at the Alberta Hospital, in addition to holding an academic post at the University of Alberta. He has training in neuromodulation from both Harvard and Duke University. As well, addiction and pain management from the Centre of Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), University of Toronto, Canada and University of British Columbia. He is also a member of the Canadian Neuromodulation Society. Ivan holds master’s degrees in medical science and healthcare management and is registered to practice psychiatry in both Canada and Ireland. Needless to say, he is passionate about mental health.

Lisa is an occupational therapist and currently advises Alberta Health Services as a specialist advisor in rehabilitation and recovery strategies. She completed her BSc Honours degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland and has worked professionally both in Northern Ireland and in an academic centre of excellence, Galway University Hospital, Ireland. She too, has completed specialist training in addiction and pain management through the Centre of Mental Health (CAMH), University of Toronto, Canada. Lisa is also a trained TMS technician and is a member of the Canadian Neuromodulation Society (CNS).

Developing The Brand

Fuelled with passion and excitement about the project, we went ahead and devised a marketing strategy to help people engage with Neuromed Clinic. The most challenging part was developing the brand. We had to develop a unique name, due to trademark law, that could have a global brand here in Canada and in Europe. After many weeks of diligent work we developed the Neuromed Clinic name and logo. We feel this name is professional and also articulate as to the service they provide.

Marketing and Advertising

We developed and produced a commercial advertisement for Facebook, YouTube, and theatres in 4k resolution to gain attention and drive awareness about the service. The results were through the roof. The videos we launched were real life patient testimonials that discussed their experience using the service, and how their lives have improved since starting the treatment. The ads have been performing extremely well.

About ProLift Concrete

A year ago, we met Tyler Thomas, the operations manager at ProLift Concrete Levelling. The company was brand-new and was trying to establish themselves, promote their brand and superior service. ProLift competes their services in and around Edmonton. We wanted the public to know how a simple levelling adjustment can impact one’s daily routine. ​As a homeowner or tenant, you are responsible for keeping your property and areas such as stairs, walkways and driveways reasonably safe for people who use them. You are also held liable for slips, trips and falls on your owned or rented property. This being said, the chances of injuries increases significantly when the concrete on your premise is uneven. ProLift Concrete utilizes Poly-urethane foam which is used to lift and level out concrete which is guaranteed to minimize injuries and accidents.

Marketing tactic

ProLift reached out to several marketing agencies and we were the right the right fit. As a creative agency we wanted the video to excite and entertain our audiences. As well we wanted to inform the public on the importance of a levelled driveway and how it improves daily activities and overall life. Our video production team casted many local actors, and even featured some ProLift staff. Our goal was to have the characters be relatable and memorable to viewers. We scheduled locations for the shoot, filmed the commercial, edited it and utilized SEO to generate more buzz for the company. The video was hugely successful, and helped acquire a large amount of clients.

Marketing Passion

We met with Tyler in 2018, through some local contacts in Edmonton. He had great aspirations on taking his brand of organic mens grooming products to the next level. With his passion and our creativity, we were able to develop new advertisements for Hard Bar Soap Co, and make his dream a reality.

We developed four budget-effective image advertisements that showcased the cool, sophisticated, and attractive vibe of the product.  The photoshoot was a lot of fun and we really enjoyed working with Tyler and Ashley as one of the sets of models. As well, we updated their existing website to make it a more direct sales site, employing more direct eCommerce tactics for consumers.

About Lace Up

Bryan Gouthro and Gordon McTavish are both successful business pioneers who have had strong careers in retail and manufacturing starting out from Edmonton and expanding globally. Bryan has been a partner and franchiser of the Brick and has excelled at turning new customers into lifelong customers.  Gordon (along with his two sons Kevin and Jeff) is a partner of Drader manufacturing and has a keen eye for supreme quality molding and plastics manufacturing.   

After many years of running successful businesses, these two entrepreneurs approached us with a brilliant idea for developing a lacing stool. A stool that could be used by anyone. Any age, any size, any mobility.

Market Testing / Focus Groups

Originally, we started with the early prototypes from the 3d printed moulds.  We wanted to show the product to a focus group and have them give us feedback and input on what could be done to improve the original design.  This was highly effective, offering our team valuable insight on use, colours, design, pricing, and other important parameters.  This allowed our team to suggest alternations and improvements, before continuing. 

Post product testing, we created our scope and developed a marketing guide complete with consumer profiles, strategies, and early campaign ideas. After this process the team decided on four beautiful colours and also features a skate slot, so all athletes can use to tie their sneakers, cleats or skates. We had a blast time launching their campaign over Christmas, and seeing people buy and enjoy the product.

Creating the Brand

We built the brand from scratch, coming up with the brand name and crafting an identity to imply “lacing”.  We also wanted to design an impressive brand that showcased the 

values of leading an active lifestyle.  By choosing a red brand colour, it helps showcase the vitality of the product.  Additionally we designed the retail box for the product and sourced the best price and quality available, along with the instructions.    

 

Marketing the Product

We developed creative entitled “So… My Parents Retired” which showcased the product as a gift for people with senior family & friends (ie. parents / grandparents).  This included developing the scripts, storyboard, casting the actors, and undertaking the video production required to execute a very funny and interesting commercial.  When marketing on social media, it is very important to have advertising that is as fun as it is informative.  We felt this commercial has an excellent balance. 

Developing an eCommerce Website

Nordic is proud to have built Lace Up’s eye catching and relevant website.It features an impressive landing page designed for high-impact conversion along with an internal eCommerce shopping cart along with full Amazon integration.  We facilitated the account setup and fulfilment through Amazon Prime’s FBA systems for our client.   

Graphic Design & Commercial Photography

This website also boasts gorgeous photos from our commercial photography team and custom graphics and animations from our in-house graphic design team. We have had such an incredible time partnering up with Gordon, Bryan, and the team at Lace Up developing and launching this product. The Why

K4 Financial came to Nordic Media locally in Edmonton, looking for a way to reach a wider audience. Frustrated about how often people fall into traps of untrustworthy sources, K4’s owner Kent Tilley wanted our marketing agency’s help to make people aware that you should feel confident in the person you choose to get financial advice from. He wanted us to create a commercial and social media campaign to reach people so they know his company could provide peace of mind through accurate professional financial advice at a reasonable price.  Also, as a professional standup comedian… our client knew that laughter is a great way to break the ice.

Consulting

During our meetings, Kent loved our approach to accessing the company’s needs and preparing a marketing campaign specifically for K4. We really got behind their company’s message, standards , beliefs, and methods and really put in full effort to give them the best value in a commercial for their brand.

Process

Excited about the idea of us creating a commercial for K4 came up with an idea and we worked with him to make it come to life. When writing up the script we kept K4’s needs top of mind and made sure our client was involved along the way.  We didn’t move forward until K4 approved the script. Once they did, our in-house creative, production crew was ready to go. 

Production

We casted locally and selected the people we thought fit the characters the best. We ended up hiring Ashley Strocky for hair and makeup and she did a fantastic job. We ended up shooting in South Edmonton in a nice quiet neighborhood and ended up shooting the day before Canada Day on the long weekend. The weather was nice and we were all excited to start. Amongst the vehicles, we borrowed for the shoot we got our hands on a Land Rover and a Mitsubishi Spider. It was really fun.

The End Result & Marketing

In the end, when we were editing the commercial it turned out great. It was humorous and effective. Included in his campaign we really worked to grow a wider community by involving people on Facebook and Instagram and are preparing to upload the commercial to youtube. We utilize social media because people are consistently present on those platforms and a large number of people see and interact with ads and interesting related posts.

With the message Kent’s company stands for and the good heart Kent has, it was a pleasure to create him a commercial and to build him an online advertisement campaign. Working with him we could tell he was a great guy and that his services were of great quality. We look forward to the commercial launch and look forward to seeing how our campaigns grow his customer base!
