Working on this video production with Jason from Wearpro Equipment and Supply, was like walking down memory lane. Jason and Matthew (our Executive Producer and part owner, here at Nordic Media) grew up together in Stoney Plain, just outside of Edmonton, and have been friends since elementary. When the opportunity arose to work together, they hopped on it without hesitation. Their new venture together was to create an engaging marketing video to capture attention and inform customers/viewers. Meetings were fun, and usually included stories about the past and about mutual friends. It’s surreal to think that their paths would cross years later.
Jason and his team at work wear pro design what’s called a “traction bolt”. It’s an alternative toice lugs for heavy machinery. Ice lugs are commonly used in cold climates to prevent track machines from sliding in icy conditions. They are welded to the top edge of a track pad and staggered, where as the traction bolt is designed to save time and money welding ice lugs onto dozers and other heavy machinery. Instead, the traction bolt fits perfectly into existing holes and easy to attach. So just bolt on and go! Its excellent ground penetration is life changing and ideal for Canadian winters. As well, it does not require a welder, saving companies thousands of dollars.
The video was straightforward and a relatively quick to shoot. The video was shot at the beginning of March, when low temperatures and heavy snowfall warnings were constantly in effect. It had snowed maybe 13 cm the night before the video shoot, so it was fantastic to showcase how sturdy and stable the traction bolt is, and how well it performs in the worst possible conditions. We shot a dozer driving on a very icy and extremely steep hill, and tied in some shots of Wear Pro employees explaining the benefits of the traction bolt and the numerous advantages. Editing the video only took a couple days and was all done in house. We chose the voiceover artist and background music we thought was best fit, to emphasize it’s strength and power. The 30 second commercial was used for social media marketing and for their website. Since launching the video, their sales have tripled.

Video Production was the topic of discussion when we met Bret and Ricardo in the fall of 2017. They came to us for creative direction for a tech forward concept that would revolutionize the way office visitor sign ins are managed. As anyone who has had experience with app development knows- it is an extremely long waiting game, filled with hurdles and curve balls. After a period of development, assessment and research we were finally to film and produce their explainer video for their app. During our creative meeting we pinned down a budget and achieved a common vision. With an affordable budget in place, the creative team got to work writing a script, filmed and edited the commercial. We staged our Nordic Media office and filmed the video production here at our location. As well, held a mini casting audition and selected two local professional actors and even featured Brett, one of the app creators. The 30 second commercial was intended to increase brand awareness and capture consumer interest. Our goal was to present the app as a convenient tool for office security and a modernized alternative for guest sign-ins. Visitor Bay believes that managing and organizing visitors can be easier with this app, as it directly notifies the individual when their appointment has arrived.

The app is extremely simple and easy to use. The steps are as follows:
It allows your visitors to check themselves in, the host is notified instantly of visitors who have appointments. As a local Edmonton marketing agency we were ecstatic when Fourcha Group, another local business, reached out to us to help them with some video production, creative and marketing projects.
We met Sid and the team over a year ago, when they were looking to build a marketing campaign for Discovery Wharf, a community in the village of Wabumun. This community would provide lakefront properties, ranging from condominiums, duplexes, houses, retail businesses, hotel and marina. As their marketing agency of choice, we had the pleasure of building a creative strategy with a video and updating some branding. We were super excited when they reached out to us this summer to help them with video production on a new commercial for Century Gates, a gated adult living community 15 minutes west of Edmonton. As a creative team we designed the layout and flow of the commercial and determined what features of the home and community would be displayed. We wanted to make the flow feel natural, believable and most of all memorable.
Century Gates is adult living at its finest, and the only gated condominium community in Parkland County. Where luxury homes have access to several golf courses within minutes, a man- made lake and walking trail. Units are 1 Acre lots and are priced starting at $599,000, and built to customization. Customizable features include triple car parking garages, front and rear decks and oversized RV garages. It’s an active community that has annual events and get togethers.
When it came down to production, we held a quick casting call for a man and a woman aged 45 and up, to play husband and wife and home owners. We only held this call open for about three days, until we found the perfect on screen couple that replicated exactly what we envisioned. In the video we also featured some Fourcha Group employees (including Sid Chadi and his wife) and numerous residents of Century Gates as extras. We had hair and makeup done on set by a local makeup artist and everyone got to enjoy the delicious barbecue food that we used as props for the commercial. Our goal for this commercial was to show the liveability of this community and to have the characters be relatable andmemorable to viewers. With lighting and a little bit of staging, we captured the architectural build and design of the homes. As well, we were able to showcase the gorgeous granite counters, breathtaking vaulted ceilings, large windows, hardwood flooring and optional finished basements. We scheduled locations for the shoot, filmed the commercial, edited it and utilized SEO to generate more buzz for the company. When it came to selecting music, we wanted something cheerful and upbeat without being too over- the- top. As well, we had a professional drone operator come to take these gorgeous aerial shots of the community. As an Edmonton marketing agency we work very closely with a couple of production representatives at CTV Edmonton and Global Edmonton, who we are an absolute pleasure to work with. The Century Gates video aired on television, for a duration of two weeks on both news channels. We also launched a social marketing campaign on Facebook to generate traffic and messages. By blasting this campaign across social media and on television, we generated numerous leads and contributed to multiple open houses.
This thirty second commercial was a complete success and working with Fourcha Group was absolutely incredible. We definitely lucked out on the weather, as it was raining non stop this entire month of July. Our cast and crew for the video were absolutely terrific and joy to work with. The number of link clicks and the number of messages they received from the ads were mind blowing. In the first 3 weeks of launching the ads, the number of walk throughs tripled. We are so proud of the turnout and are extremely honoured to have been a part of this project and look forward to many more!
The cameras are rolling as we film the basement movie scene
They wouldn’t let us drive the car only run the video camera
You must feed your actors, otherwise they will protest
Century Gates features customizable RV garages with 1 acre lots

A year ago, we met Tyler Thomas, the operations manager at ProLift Concrete Levelling. The company was brand-new and was trying to establish themselves, promote their brand and superior service. ProLift competes their services in and around Edmonton. We wanted the public to know how a simple levelling adjustment can impact one’s daily routine. As a homeowner or tenant, you are responsible for keeping your property and areas such as stairs, walkways and driveways reasonably safe for people who use them. You are also held liable for slips, trips and falls on your owned or rented property. This being said, the chances of injuries increases significantly when the concrete on your premise is uneven. ProLift Concrete utilizesPoly-urethane foam which is used to lift and level out concrete which is guaranteed to minimize injuries and accidents.
Above is a visual of the 3 steps in the ProLift process.
ProLift reached out to several marketing agencies and we were the right the right fit. As a creative agency we wanted the video to excite and entertain our audiences. As well we wanted to inform the public on the importance of a levelled driveway and how it improves daily activities and overall life. Our video production team casted many local actors, and even featured some ProLift staff. Our goal was to have the characters be relatable and memorable to viewers. We scheduled locations for the shoot, filmed the commercial, edited it and utilized SEO to generate more buzz for the company. The video was hugely successful, and helped acquire a large amount of clients.
What sets Tyler and his team apart from other competitors in this industry is that theybelieve in great quality work and value new and repeat customers. He truly cares for his clients and ensures strong results. He is adamant about taking before and after shots to show real results. The team is extremely professional and personable. They have exceptional knowledge and experience in concrete lifting/levelling. ProLift Concrete Levelling is environmentally friendly and cost effective. They specialize in industrial, commercial and residential polyurethane concrete lifting service. Their excellent knowledge and more than 8 years of experience ensure they provide Albertans with the best quality work.
K4 Financial came to Nordic Media locally in Edmonton, looking for a way to reach a wider audience. Frustrated about how often people fall into traps of untrustworthy sources, K4’s owner Kent Tilley wanted our marketing agency’s help to make people aware that you should feel confident in the person you choose to get financial advice from. He wanted us to create a commercial and social media campaign to reach people so they know his company could provide peace of mind through accurate professional financial advice at a reasonable price. Also, as a professional standup comedian… our client knew that laughter is a great way to break the ice.
During our meetings, Kent loved our approach to accessing the company’s needs and preparing a marketing campaign specifically for K4. We really got behind their company’s message, standards , beliefs, and methods and really put in full effort to give them the best value in a commercial for their brand.
Excited about the idea of us creating a commercial for K4 came up with an idea and we worked with him to make it come to life. When writing up the script we kept K4’s needs top of mind and made sure our client was involved along the way.We didn’t move forward until K4 approved the script. Once they did, our in-house creative, production crew was ready to go.
We casted locally and selected the people we thought fit the characters the best. We ended up hiring Ashley Strocky for hair and makeup and she did a fantastic job. We ended up shooting in South Edmonton in a nice quiet neighborhood and ended up shooting the day before Canada Day on the long weekend. The weather was nice and we were all excited to start. Amongst the vehicles, we borrowed for the shoot we got our hands on a Land Rover and a Mitsubishi Spider. It was really fun.
The End Result & Marketing
In the end, when we were editing the commercial it turned out great. It was humorous and effective. Included in his campaign we really worked to grow a wider community by involving people on Facebook and Instagram and are preparing to upload the commercial to youtube. We utilize social media because people are consistently present on those platforms and a large number of people see and interact with ads and interesting related posts.
With the message Kent’s company stands for and the good heart Kent has, it was a pleasure to create him a commercial and to build him an online advertisement campaign. Working with him we could tell he was a great guy and that his services were of great quality. We look forward to the commercial launch and look forward to seeing how our campaigns grow his customer base!

ProLift, the concrete leveling company, was looking for a way to increase awareness of their services and came to us looking for our help. They had a website but really wanted something to increase client traffic and gain attention. Our marketing company specializes in building clientele bases through traditional and new media and they thought we were their best choice. In our meeting they explained they wanted a way to increase calls and consultations, and talking it over, we both came to the conclusion that a commercial could do just that.
At Nordic, we are an Edmonton marketing agency that has the creative ability to do in-house video production. ProLift really liked how versatile we are as a company in what we provide and being pleased with the one on one care we put into our consultations they became very excited for the commercial.
We made sure that they had creative control and approved the script before shooting. We came up with a few different ideas for the script and proposed the concepts to them. They decided that the Mother In Law idea would be their favorite for us to make.
We were all enthusiastic about production and shot the commercial at our director Matthew’s house. Casting local Edmonton actors we had a crew and a cast all dedicated to making the best production possible. For props, we rented a wheelchair, used the ProLift truck and equipment, used real ProLift uniforms, and used what we had on set with permission of our director. It took about a day to film the main part of the commercial and we went to a different location to film the section where they lifted the concrete. The first day of the shoot went smoothly. We had to work around the clouds covering the sun and ended up using a light reflecting board to make sure we could light the actor’s faces when we were outside. The second day went amazing as well it was fascinating watching the ProLift workers do their magic.
The End Result
In the end, ProLift was very satisfied with our company’s work and we are proud we were able to make another company’s ad campaign a success. We are glad we were able to represent such a quality company and it was a pleasure working with everyone involved. With the launch of the commercial, we know the company is going to be a success!

Before the age of the internet, marketing and advertising for small businesses was difficult. Commercials were expensive to produce and airtime was at a premium, as larger competitors saturated the signals. In the last decade, we have seen juggernauts such as Google and Facebook make advertising more accessible to the mass market. With a few minutes of forethought and some new age tools, any business owner can create an advertisement and target their key demographics (location, age, interests, etc).
Even here in Edmonton, you can advertise across the planet with just a click. Sometimes the response is great and other times a complete failure. So why does one advertisement succeed and the other fail?
It comes down to creativity and quality.
Creativity is important. With the right message, you will have a positive outcome. With the wrong message you could have no outcome or even worse, you could have a public backlash.
In the days when traditional media ruled the roost, advertisements needed to be generic enough to appeal to all segments of the population to improve reception. In the days of digital advertising, messages can be custom tailored and delivered to only those who are most likely to respond. This is the reason why I receive advertisements for beard oil and my wife does not.
The “big players” are constantly battling in the marketplace with creative ways to communicate their products and services. They spend significant resources to develop and market test ideas even before they commence video production or purchase ad space. They have standardized the process and created a semi-scientific process to marketing. The great thing about marketing, however, is that the rules are constantly changing as new technology and creativity interrupt the status quo.
In 2015, 2016, and 2017 Nordic Media partnered with the City of Edmonton to promote their “Front Yards in Bloom” campaign. You likely saw this advertisement at the movie theatres and online. In 2016 Edmonton won 1st place out of all international competitors in the large city category.
Quality is the second component. With the age of Facebook and YouTube we have become accustomed to seeing a viral video shot from cell phones garnering millions of views. Many of us think we can replicate the viral video concept and even apply it to our business
If you are thinking this way, then I commend you, as you are ahead of the game. You understand today’s audience wants entertainment mixed in with their advertisements: they want to laugh, cry, and be motivated with your message.
What comes next is usually the part that fails: the execution. Out comes the cell phone video camera, along with a script that no one else vetted. Maybe the script wasn’t as good as once thought or maybe it is just too long considering anything over 45 seconds is going into the “danger zone”. Attention spans are incredibly short in today’s world. That small cell phone microphone was not invented to pickup audio from across the room.
Did you know even in Facebook Advertising each advertisement gets a relevance score? If your score is low, you are paying many magnitudes higher for every engagement you get. Facebook doesn’t want poor ads clogging up their news feeds, so if they are forced to show a low quality advertisement, they will charge a premium for it. A good advertisement should be costing pennies per engagement, while a poor advertisement is costing dollars.
In short: good creative and a quality production is actually pretty tough to master. It does not matter if you are hiring a professional company to do your marketing or if you are doing it yourself. You must research, get critical feedback on your ideas, and produce quality content. Quality marketing doesn’t just help keep market share, it grows the base by attracting new eyes to the business.
In this example the advertisement received a relevance score of 8, meaning the advertisement is having a strong clickthrough rate and the content is resonating with the demographic we targeted.
To finish answering my original question: small businesses compete online through good ideas and quality content. Anyone can have a website and a virtual presence instantly, but getting people to give you their time, attention, and money is much harder.
