Creative Agency: Branding Dr. Michael Major

As a creative agency, we measure our creative branding success by our clients overall satisfaction, reaction and consumer traction. At Nordic Media, we start every project by fully understanding the service and/or product and how it is desired to resonate in the consumers mind. We full heartedly support and nurture the brands we create by researching the industry, it’s competitors and market position. Unlike many other creative and branding agencies, we put a lot of emphasis on colour psychology into our branding projects based on its industry. We have had the privilege of getting to tackle new marketing challenges in various industries and watch them establish their competitive advantage. When it came to branding the creative message for Dr. Michael Major, the main focus was for it to be known, “snoring is not normal, not even a little”- Dr. Michael Major. Our goal was to make it known that it’s not healthy, it is preventative and by treating it, can improve an individuals quality of life! After the brand is launched, we will determine its overall success through financial benchmarks and revenue.

Creative Agency and marketing the brand here in Edmonton

When selecting the brand colours for Dr. Major, our mission was to appear professional, authoritative, trustworthy and provide a sense of tranquility. Blue is a highly used colour in the healthcare field, as it has high associations with being perceived as serious and mature, so it seemed fitting to use for the brand. In the icon, we featured an abstract image of an individual sleeping and chose to incorporate a sea-foam green colour as it creatively signifies growth, refreshment and balance.

When selecting the brand colours, some of the things we take into consideration are:

  • Gender: Is my brand traditionally masculine or feminine?
  • Tone: Is my brand playful or serious?
  • Value: Is my brand luxurious or affordable?
  • Time: Is my brand modern or classic?
  • Age: Is my brand youthful or mature?
  • Energy: Is my brand loud or subdued?

Understanding Marketing Goals

In university, Dr. Michael Major began researching Sleep Apnea and along with two other doctors, wrote his thesis paper on it. Now ten years later he and those same doctors are opening a clinic where they as a team treat the many layers and issues of the disorder. Together these specialists develop the best treatment strategy for the child suffering with sleep apnea. Many do not realizes how important a good quality of sleep is necessary for child development and overall health. Poor sleep can affect family dynamics, social consequences, schooling and curricular achievement.

Creative agency works on meaningful branding for Sleep Apnea.

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a type of sleep disorder that can have serious health complications. An individual with sleep apnea will experience short periods of not breathing while asleep. The most common symptoms are loud snoring and fatigue, even when the individual has technically slept enough. Although there are many forms of sleep apnea, the most common, obstructive sleep apnea, happens when the muscles in the throat relax and the airway becomes obstructed. There’s also central sleep apnea, which is caused by the brain failing to send the right signals to the muscles controlling breathing.

Local Edmonton Video Production and Marketing Agency

In 2019, Dr. Major utilized our studio to produce a commercial used for advertising locally in both Cineplex and Landmark theatres here in Edmonton for his orthodontist clinic, Verve Orthodontics.  Here is what we created.

For those that don’t know us, we are a full creative agency specializing in marketing, web and video. The city of ‘champions’. The home of the Oilers, the Eskimos, the Prospects. Our Mission As A Creative Agency

Our goal as a creative agency here in Edmonton, is to help our clients stand out from its competitors. Marketing is all about strategy, and during our brand planning and strategy session, the biggest question is “what is the competitive advantage”? By asking ourselves this, we determine the strengths of the company and how the product or service benefits the client. After doing a competitor analysis, brand discovery, and marketing guide, we soon discovered how necessary and essential Alpha Protects is in the market place. In order to differentiate Alpha Protects from other surface protection suppliers, we knew we had to create a cutting edge brand and a leader in the industry. We highlighted Alpha’s superior strength products, deep knowledge about worksite safety and competitive pricing. We branded Alpha as “The Leader of the Pack”, creating a distinctive market position that separated Alpha from other site protection suppliers.

As an Edmonton creative agency we created this new brand and logo

What We Provide As A Creative Agency

We are a creative agency that is determined to deliver great marketing results. Marketing is the language that you use to communicate with your audiences, and different projects require a different form of marketing. Alpha Protects was originally Alpha Industries, however with organizational restructuring came an opportunity for rebranding. When it came to branding, we knew there was  plenty of opportunity to play on the term “Alpha”. During our creative meeting, the first thing that came to mind “alpha” of a wolf pack. Being tough, well respected and an overall leader taking charge. When it came to colour selection, navy blue was top of our minds. Navy blue is associated with power, confidence, intellect and authority (beyond suitable for the alpha wolf). We then wanted to soften it with a contrasting and memorable colour. Yellow was decided on. As it increases awareness, caution and energy… which is mandatory for job site safety. Our vision was for the image to have a protective edginess, but not menacing. After a couple drafts and a few meticulous alterations and corrections, our artist blew our minds. The logo was absolutely brilliant and our client was thrilled.

Promotional Materials Completed By A Local Creative Agency

After nailing down the logo and branding, we provided our client with various promotional materials. As with every client, we provided Alpha with the new brand standards document, that included everything from colour shades, font and the logo. We designed and ordered business cards and redesigned Alpha’s new product catalogue. As a surface protection supplier, they have an enormous inventory and various products. Our team created a gorgeous website and implemented WooCommerce for online transactions and convenient shipping. Unlike many other surface protection sites, it is user friendly, clean and easy to navigate. Product photos were recycled, and carefully selected for maximum sales.

The site was officially launched at the beginning of this month, as well as Alpha’s social media pages. It’s an exciting moment when we see, a stream of followers roll in, as well as likes, comments and shares. It was a project that we thoroughly enjoyed working on, and take great pride in the branding and website. Check it out here!

Marketing Video and Production in Edmonton

Childhood Friends: Video Production

Working on this video production with Jason from Wearpro Equipment and Supply, was like walking down memory lane. Jason and Matthew (our Executive Producer and part owner, here at Nordic Media) grew up together in Stoney Plain, just outside of Edmonton, and have been friends since elementary. When the opportunity arose to work together, they hopped on it without hesitation. Their new venture together was to create an engaging marketing video to capture attention and inform customers/viewers. Meetings were fun, and usually included stories about the past and about mutual friends. It’s surreal to think that their paths would cross years later.

Edmonton Marketing Video Production

Jason and his team at work wear pro design what’s called a “traction bolt”. It’s an alternative to  ice lugs for heavy machinery. Ice lugs are commonly used in cold climates to prevent track machines from sliding in icy conditions. They are welded to the top edge of a track pad and staggered, where as the traction bolt is designed to save time and money welding ice lugs onto dozers and other heavy machinery. Instead, the traction bolt fits perfectly into existing holes and easy to attach. So just bolt on and go! Its excellent ground penetration is life changing and ideal for Canadian winters. As well, it does not require a welder, saving companies thousands of dollars.

The Video Production

The video was straightforward and a relatively quick to shoot. The video was shot at the beginning of March, when low temperatures and heavy snowfall warnings were constantly in effect. It had snowed maybe 13 cm the night before the  video shoot, so it was fantastic to showcase how sturdy and stable the traction bolt is, and how well it performs in the worst possible conditions. We shot a dozer driving on a very icy and extremely steep hill, and tied in some shots of Wear Pro employees explaining the benefits of the traction bolt and the numerous advantages. Editing the video only took a couple days and was all done in house. We chose the voiceover artist and background music we thought was best fit, to emphasize it’s strength and power. The 30 second commercial was used for social media marketing and for their website. Since launching the video, their sales have tripled.

2019 started with the ultimate bang. We had so many exciting projects on the go and were super jazzed for all of them, especially Jurassic Forest.

About the Park:

For those that don’t know about Jurassic Forest, it is a seasonal tourist attraction located minutes away from Edmonton on Highway 28. Its located in a mature boreal forest and contains dozens of life size Dinosaurs, two kilometres of discovery trails, an adventure playground, mini golf course, a concession, a learning centre and gift shop. Its a great forest adventure and the ultimate way to spend a day with the family.

The General manager and director of marketing at Jurassic Forest came to us near the “end” of our first winter in need for a commercial. Greg and Andi were so down to earth, easy to chat with and were open to all of our ideas. They had an incredible opportunity and budget to have a 15 second commercial to play in almost every Edmonton cineplex theatre. Our vision was to entice the audience in that screening. Showing viewers the adventure that awaits locally, in Edmonton’s backyard.

Marketing and Creative:

As a team we decided to mix it up a bit, and show it from the Dinosaurs perspective, of the child entering their park. Our talented graphic designer (who happens to be a huge dinosaur buff) went to town sketching out an incredible story board. Followed by our executive producer converting it to vector animation, and enhancing the viewers experience with exciting sound affects. We strived to make the 15 second commercial impactful, as it was released a couple weeks before the Season’s grand opening.

Our goal was to appeal to families with children and encourage a sense of curiosity about the park. We wanted them to want to know more, so we included the website in the closing scene. Jurassic Forest is hugely underrated and is a paradise for parents and children. Here, kids can learn about artifacts, and the evolution of humans, dinosaur facts as well as be entertained by life size animatronic versions dinosaurs. The Prehistoric park is designed for visitors to learn, discover and explore. The park provides exceptional educational programs aligned with Alberta’s curriculum, corporate events and even does Birthday party packages.

A Rawring time:

This project allowed us to relive our childhood, delve back into our youth and have the ability to create, design and play with dinosaurs. Jurassic Forest, thank you for the opportunity, we had so much fun and cannot wait to play a work party at the Park!

We kicked off 2019 with a rockstar client, Dr. Michael Major and Verve orthodontics. He is an orthodontist who specializes in Invisalign and owns the coolest office we have ever seen. It’s an orthodontic office/ cafe/ rec- room, all in one. A paradise for children, and a treat for parents.

We first met Michael back in 2018, with talk of bringing awareness to his clinic. He wanted to present the fun and cheerful side of orthodontistry.

Majorly Great:

Instead of the traditional, sterile, plain white walled office with maybe a picture of a flower or a landscape awkwardly thrown up to spice things up a little. He opted for lively colours, huge windows and non florescent lighting (thank goodness). He created a gaming room, a foosball corner, provided computer monitors, an espresso and beverage bar and of course a COMFORTABLE seating area. This office really has it all. When creating this local St. Albert Disney Land, he considered what his own children would love to have and brought it to reality. Michael wanted to showcase the amazing space he built, and to encourage a sense of enjoyment in people’s orthodontic journey and development.

We met for lunch at a nearby restaurant, and within the first few minutes we knew he was not a regular, doctor. When he ordered a coke, we were all in. He’s not the stereotypical ‘sugar sergeant’ and instead believes in a balanced lifestyle. He is a world class human and father, and truly understands what a well realistic diet is.

Marketing Strategy:

We wanted to our audience to feel what we feel when being welcomed into Dr. Majors office, being pleasantly greeted with optimism and positive energy. His patients adore him, and his work truly speaks volumes. He’s like a dental magician,  fixing overbites and underbites, cross-bites, overcrowding, spaces between teeth and overcrowding of teeth. Because of his authentic care and devotion to his practice and his patients, we wanted him to be featured in the 60 second commercial. Our production team casted many local actors and featured some of Dr. Major’s friendly staff and even his adorable children. The commercial was running in theatres across Edmonton and St. Albert and was a huge success.Dr. Major truly cares for his clients. He is remarkable at what he does… perfecting smiles and bolstering confidence for all. It was a true pleasure working with you, Michael and we had a blast creating the live. laugh. smile. commercial.

My name is Ivanna Babic and I am passionate about creating advertising content. I recently joined the team at Nordic Media as the new Marketing Coordinator and wanted to share a bit about myself.

I am very outgoing, super driven by results and incredibly competitive when it comes to sports. I love to travel and am that tourist with the selfie stick wherever I go. I graduated from the Alberta school of Business, specializing in Marketing and minored in retail and services. During my undergrad, I was privileged to study in France for a semester, where I studied European Marketing and strategic business practices. After years of retail, as a sales associate and sales manager, I decided to throw in the towel and get started on what I’m most passionate about. I love all things social media, writing creative content, and creating brand strategies for successful ad campaigns.

I am overjoyed to be working with the Nordic Media team, and to get a feel for a real full creative marketing agency. Here, I have been given the opportunity to partake in marketing exiting creative ideas, commercial video productions, and fostering new & existing client relationships.

So what’s it like working at our marketing agency in Edmonton?  Truthfully, it’s incredibly rewarding and incredibly challenging at the same time.

Over the past years our company was growing exponentially, so we just built our new studio this year, moved our entire staff over, expanded our team to serve our clients better. Throughout the expansion we have been meeting our deadlines for our clients for their marketing campaigns and product & service launches.

The studio at our creative agency in Edmonton

PRO-TIP: The #1 thing I tell clients when they come to our company is that as long as we plan well, we can plan on success!

Magic Pill For Marketing

There is no “magic pill” to marketing.  I would argue that good advertisements go a long way to reaching the correct demographic and converting them over, but the true key ingredient to any creative agency worth their salt is: planning.

Facebook & Google Advertising

I’ve been at this almost a decade and in that time I have been at the forefront of changes in advertising, from tradition to digital, and even more challenging are the micro changes in platforms such as Google and Facebook.  Google once was a dominant giant in keyword advertising with Google Adwords and Youtube, but recently we have seen Facebook taking over the advertising marketplace significantly.  I’m sure by this time next year we will be talking about the significant changes Google is making to help with more effective advertising funnels for their customers (they just changed the named of “Google Adwords” to “Google Ads” as an example).

To be successful on these platforms you can use them independently, where conversions are taking place right on the social media platforms or you can use these platforms in tandem with your website as a sales and conversion portal.

PRO-TIP: I get a lot of questions about SEO… The #1 most important SEO tool is your very own website.  Buying “SEO” services such as link building and article creation make no sense if the website itself does not have native SEO built into the site.

Against the Creative Clock

A lot of times our customers come to us after have been burnt by a previous marketing process.  We look at their existing website and funnels to find it is simply not geared towards converting their clients.  What makes the process even that much more difficult, is sometimes these clients can be significantly against the clock and need results even quicker due to lost time trying other marketing practices through agencies they used to partner with.

All hope is not lost if you are in that situation… the great thing, is we can use advertising through social media and keep the customer converting directly on the platform and not send them to an unoptimized website.  You may have seen things like “lead forms” and “messenger” being a more common way to generate leads.

PRO-TIP: we use it ourselves and it works splendidly.

Our clients get treated comfortably in our marketing agency. Quick drive from anywhere in Edmonton. Coffee is always great!

#1 Question I Get In Marketing:

So here is the biggest complaint I hear about marketing and advertising: “If Facebook and Google have made these processes more and more easy to use for the average consumer then why doesn’t it work for me?”

Well, there are nearly limitless minor reasons, but it all comes down to 2 major factors:

  1. The Ad
  2. The Audience

Let’s talk about “the ad” first.  Most advertisements I see out in social media land are created at very low cost, with very little planning, and end up falling short.  The truth of the matter is a lot of people out there are doing the same thing: “Hey, here is my business… we are great… do business with us.”  These ads are being lost in a sea of content.  They are not converting because people skate right past them.  To make a great ad we must keep the audience in mind but also factor in what is going to make someone stop what they are doing, take time out of their day, and connect with your business.  A truly great advertisement is one that evokes emotion: (1) laughter, (2) passion, (3) sadness, (4) intelligence, and yes, even (5) concern.

This may sound simple, but it is not.  Crafting a unique, captivating, sensation advertisement is the most challenging part of our business.  It takes time, it takes planning, it takes testing, and most of all patience.

Now, let’s talk about “the audience.”  It doesn’t matter what platform you advertise with, you can easily identify your demographics.  A lot of the problems I see when clients come to us with their ineffective campaigns is that either their audiences were too broad or too narrow (missing people).  Let’s say for example you are in the concrete repair business.  You can easily target people who have been recently looking for this service (through Google) and convert quite effectively with the right advertisement.  On the flip side, you can “proactively” seek and search out these customers (through Facebook) and by getting your demographics just right and enjoy a low cost to conversion.

PRO-TIP: it’s relatively easy to target users on Google who are looking for a particular product or service; the cost can be quite high (I feel so much empathy for a business like real estate, ouch $$$$).  It’s a bit tricker on Facebook, because you can massage your demographics, but the real magic is in an effective advertisement.

Video Production Matters! Quality Matters!

I think this needs to be stated.  Yes, there are a lot of cat and viral videos out there that get tens of millions of views that are low quality.  Unless your business has proprietary footage of an amazing cat, an act of God, or something else you might want to rethink a low quality strategy of advertising with your cell phone video.  This ad here is a prime example of what we did.

Mother In Law from Nordic Media on Vimeo.

So What Should I Look For In A Marketing Agency?

Well I’d like to come right out of the gate and say “choose us”, but it’s quite alright if you don’t.  The most important thing you should look for in a marketing agency is that they can show you results.  Many creative agencies or video production companies out there can show you great images, videos, and ads they created, but the question you should be asking for is: “show me the results” or if you feel real cheeky “show me the money!”   <- If you didn’t catch the reference, you may have not grown up watching Jerry Maguire… I think I still have the VHS copy if you want to borrow it.

Cheers,

Matthew Altheim

The Why

K4 Financial came to Nordic Media locally in Edmonton, looking for a way to reach a wider audience. Frustrated about how often people fall into traps of untrustworthy sources, K4’s owner Kent Tilley wanted our marketing agency’s help to make people aware that you should feel confident in the person you choose to get financial advice from. He wanted us to create a commercial and social media campaign to reach people so they know his company could provide peace of mind through accurate professional financial advice at a reasonable price.  Also, as a professional standup comedian… our client knew that laughter is a great way to break the ice.

Consulting

During our meetings, Kent loved our approach to accessing the company’s needs and preparing a marketing campaign specifically for K4. We really got behind their company’s message, standards , beliefs, and methods and really put in full effort to give them the best value in a commercial for their brand.

Process

Excited about the idea of us creating a commercial for K4 came up with an idea and we worked with him to make it come to life. When writing up the script we kept K4’s needs top of mind and made sure our client was involved along the way.  We didn’t move forward until K4 approved the script. Once they did, our in-house creative, production crew was ready to go.

Production

We casted locally and selected the people we thought fit the characters the best. We ended up hiring Ashley Strocky for hair and makeup and she did a fantastic job. We ended up shooting in South Edmonton in a nice quiet neighborhood and ended up shooting the day before Canada Day on the long weekend. The weather was nice and we were all excited to start. Amongst the vehicles, we borrowed for the shoot we got our hands on a Land Rover and a Mitsubishi Spider. It was really fun.

The End Result & Marketing

In the end, when we were editing the commercial it turned out great. It was humorous and effective. Included in his campaign we really worked to grow a wider community by involving people on Facebook and Instagram and are preparing to upload the commercial to youtube. We utilize social media because people are consistently present on those platforms and a large number of people see and interact with ads and interesting related posts.

With the message Kent’s company stands for and the good heart Kent has, it was a pleasure to create him a commercial and to build him an online advertisement campaign. Working with him we could tell he was a great guy and that his services were of great quality. We look forward to the commercial launch and look forward to seeing how our campaigns grow his customer base!
